About Togetsukyo Bridge

The scenery in Katsushika Hokusai's prints, with Arashiyama being the most representative landscape.

Details

The Togetsukyo Bridge was built in the early 9th century during the Heian period and has been rebuilt multiple times after being destroyed by floods. It is said to have been named because Emperor Kameyama of the Kamakura period, while boating to enjoy the moon, remarked that the moon appeared to be moving as if it were crossing the bridge. Togetsukyo Bridge has appeared in ukiyo-e works by artists such as Utagawa Hiroshige and Katsushika Hokusai, and has become the most representative scenery of Arashiyama. The current Togetsukyo Bridge, constructed of concrete in 1934, is designed to support vehicle traffic while still following traditional bridge-building methods. To blend with the surrounding landscape, the railings are made of wood, making it a classic filming location that does not look out of place for period dramas. Perfectly integrated with the scenery of spring cherry blossoms, summer greenery, autumn maple leaves, and winter snow, it attracts a continuous stream of tourists with cameras at any time of the year. Located about 150 meters north of the Arashiyama Station on the Randen line, crossing the bridge leads to Nakanojima Park, which is planted with various cherry trees. This area also features a charming small bridge, and crossing it brings you closer to the Hankyu Arashiyama Station.

Highlights

On both sides of the Togetsukyo Bridge and on Nakanojima Island, there are many cafes with excellent views. The bridge is always crowded with tourists, so it’s better to visit on a weekday morning when there are fewer people. It is also recommended to take a rickshaw on the north side of the Togetsukyo Bridge, as you might get insider information about hidden spots from the rickshaw puller.
