About Tottori Sand Dunes Sand Museum

Step into a fragile and delicate world built of sand.

Details

The Sand Museum is the world's first museum dedicated to showcasing sand sculptures. Curated by Katsuhiko Chaen, who was selected as one of the "100 Most Respected Japanese People," the museum invites sand sculptors from across the country to create the highest quality sand sculptures in the world. The exhibition theme at the Sand Museum changes every year, and after the exhibition period ends, all sand sculptures are returned to their original state as sand grains. This means that all works can only be viewed during the exhibition period, which is a unique feature. In consideration of the environment, the museum has a policy of not using any binding agents and only employs sand and water from the Tottori Sand Dunes for intricate carving. The stunning sand sculptures appear as if they could move at any moment, creating a breathtaking spectacle. Although the exhibition themes frequently change, the basic concept revolves around "traveling the world with sand." In the past, various themes have included Nordic countries, Asia, the Czech Republic, and Slovakia. Additionally, photography of the sand sculptures within the museum is permitted.

Highlights

The event is held from mid-April to January of the following year. (Dates vary each year, please check the official website for confirmation.) Each year features a different theme, and the same works will not be seen a second time. Exquisite works created by world-class artists come together. All displayed works are available for photography.
