About Mount Mitake
A mountain of wishes with over 2000 years of history, exuding a sense of mystery.
Details
Mount Mitake is a sacred mountain of mountain worship, primarily developed from the "Musashi Mitake Shrine," formerly known as "Kinpu-san Mitake Zao Gongen." This mountain, with its unique atmosphere, enjoys considerable popularity. Behind Mount Mitake are the Oku-no-in and Mount Odake, which were said to be training grounds for Yamabushi and practitioners who ran on steep rocky terrain and ridges. The culture of the "Moshi" (prayer priests) that has been passed down since the Edo period is still preserved today.
With an elevation of 929 meters, there are multiple hiking trails suitable for beginners to advanced climbers, allowing for selection based on difficulty or time. The walk from the cable car station "Mitake-san" to the summit at "Musashi Mitake Shrine" takes about 30 minutes, making it an easy route for beginners to challenge. Along the way, there are important sites such as lodges and shops run by the "Moshi" serving worshippers of the "Musashi Mitake Shrine," as well as the protected primeval forest "Shin'en no Mori," where logging has been prohibited since ancient times. If you do not take the cable car, it takes about 1 hour and 30 minutes to hike from the foot of the mountain to the summit. Nearby, there are hiking routes along the river leading to the rock garden, as well as routes targeting neighboring mountains like "Hinode-yama" and "Odake."
