📝 Introduction
Myogi Mountain is one of the "Three Mountains of Jomo" and is praised as one of Japan's three great scenic wonders.
📖 Details
Myogi Mountain is located on the western side of the Kamigō Sanzen, near Nagano Prefecture. It is said that after a volcanic eruption approximately 6 to 4 million years ago, the mountain took on its steep and rugged unique shape through processes of weathering and erosion, earning it the title of one of Japan's "Three Great Scenic Wonders." Myogi Mountain has several peaks, with Mount Sōma being the highest at 1,104 meters. Just as celebrated in the Kamigō paper, "Myogi Mountain framed by autumn leaves," the vibrant red foliage highlights the unique beauty of the steep cliffs, making it a pride of the mountainous region of Gunma.
Myogi Shrine is located on the mid-slope of Mount Hakuyama, the main peak of Myogi Mountain. Established in the 6th century, it enshrines the mountain itself, with deities such as Yamato Takeru no Mikoto and Toyoke no Ōkami. Since the medieval period, it has been a site of deep faith for both samurai and common people, and it was granted 30 koku of land by the Edo shogunate. The expansive grounds include the main hall, worship hall, karamon (Chinese-style gate), and sōmon (main gate). The main hall and worship hall are connected by the heiden (offering hall). The main hall, along with the karamon and sōmon in front of it, is designated as an Important Cultural Property. The exquisite and luxurious carvings and the colorful main shrine are also known as "the Nikko of Kamigō." The 200-year-old weeping cherry tree is another highlight not to be missed. It is a popular energy spot for those seeking good fortune and career advancement.
