📝 Introduction
The shrine located at the site of the "Ide no Sawa Ancient Battlefield" is one of the "Machida San Tenjin."
📖 Details
Located at the site of the "Ide no Sawa Battlefield" in Tokyo, the main deity worshipped here is Sugawara no Michizane, known as the god of learning. This shrine is one of the "Three Tenjin Shrines of Machida," along with Machida Tenmangu in Haramachida and Tenjin Shrine in Minami-Otani.
Its origins can be traced back to the 7th year of the Kan'ei era (1630), when Osawa Genba carved a statue of the Tenjin and enshrined it within the shrine, becoming the guardian deity of Honmachida. The main hall was rebuilt in the 7th year of the Kyōhō era (1722), and the shrine building was constructed in the 5th year of the Tenmei era (1785). In the 35th year of the Meiji era (1902), under national policy, it was merged with the Chingen Tenjin Shrine, Dairokuten Shrine, Shichimen Shrine, Inari Shrine, and Hakusan Shrine.
Within the shrine grounds, there are also Atago Shrine, which enshrines the fire god Kagutsuchi, Benten Shrine, which enshrines the water goddess Benzaiten, and a subordinate Inari Shrine, which enshrines the rice deity Uka no Mitama. These places are deeply revered by the local community.
Every year on August 25th, a summer grand festival is held, featuring local Kagura performances, shrine maiden dances, and lantern offerings. The grounds are bustling with many vendors, attracting a continuous stream of worshippers.
