Adjacent to Goryokaku Park, the "Goryokaku Tower" offers a view of the national historic site Goryokaku from a height of 90 meters. It is a beloved landmark in Hakodate, cherished by both locals and tourists. The tower provides a 360-degree panoramic view of the seasonal scenery within Goryokaku Park, showcasing cherry blossoms, autumn leaves, fresh greenery, and snowy landscapes, as well as famous attractions like Mount Hakodate, the Tsugaru Strait, and Hakodate Bay, which is its greatest feature.
Inside the observation area, the Goryokaku History Corridor features 16 physical models that depict parts of Goryokaku's history following Perry's arrival in Japan, with wall-mounted screens presenting a timeline and historical information about Goryokaku. Additionally, there are guided historical tours conducted by staff members, allowing visitors to experience both the beauty of history and the landscape.
The majority of the ceiling and walls in the first-floor atrium are made of glass, serving as a relaxation space for local residents and tourists, with a stage for concerts or exhibitions. Furthermore, on weekends, the tower's mascot "Gōta-kun" makes appearances, attracting many parents and children to visit.
