📝 Introduction
The Fuji Sengen Shrine in Suruga Province boasts a magnificent and splendidly beautiful shrine building.
📖 Details
Shizuoka Asama Shrine is a collective term for Kamibu Shrine, Asama Shrine, and Ootoshi no Mikoto Shrine, commonly referred to as "Asama-sensei." Since ancient times, it has been deeply revered by the people as the head shrine of Suruga Province. It is said that during the Edo period, Takechiyo (the childhood name of Tokugawa Ieyasu) held his coming-of-age ceremony here, which is why it is particularly respected by the Tokugawa family.
The current shrine buildings were constructed over a span of 60 years, starting in 1904 under the Tokugawa shogunate, and all 26 structures are designated as Important Cultural Properties of Japan. The shrine complex, adorned with vibrant lacquer, is magnificent, with the most spectacular being the two-story main hall that stands 21 meters tall. Since 2014, a renovation project titled "20-Year Renovation ~ Heisei Reiwa Major Renovation ~" has been underway, with the shrine buildings undergoing repairs in sequence. The newly completed, splendid shrine is definitely worth a visit.
In addition to Kamibu Shrine, Asama Shrine, and Ootoshi no Mikoto Shrine, the grounds also include Fukuyama Shrine, Yachikata Shrine, Sukuna Hikona Shrine, and Tamahoko Shrine. It is said that if one visits all seven shrines, their wishes will be fulfilled. The area has many steps, so it is advisable to wear comfortable shoes if you plan to visit all seven shrines.
