📖 Details
The Shirahige Shrine is the oldest shrine in Omi, Shiga Prefecture, located on the northwest side of Lake Biwa, the largest lake in Japan. It is said to have a history of over 2000 years. A massive red torii gate spans National Route 161, reminiscent of the Itsukushima Shrine in Hiroshima Prefecture, and is thus referred to as the "Itsukushima of Omi."
This site serves as the head shrine of many Shirahige Shrines across the country, dedicated to the deity Sarutahiko no Mikoto. As suggested by the name "Shirahige," it has long been worshipped as the god of longevity and health, widely known for blessing people with long life. This deity is also known as the "God of Guidance," bestowing blessings for love, good fortune, and academic success, among other aspects of life and work, and has numerous followers throughout Japan.
Following the last wishes of Toyotomi Hideyoshi, his son Hideyori donated funds to construct the main hall of the shrine in 1603, which was designated as an Important Cultural Property in modern times. The Eitai Chōya Lantern, installed in August of the 4th year of Tenpo (1833), is also a must-see. Additionally, several stone monuments within Shirahige Shrine feature poems inspired by this location, penned by famous poets such as Murasaki Shikibu, Matsuo Bashō, and Yosano Tekkan and Akiko. While reflecting on history, visitors can leisurely stroll through the shrine grounds filled with captivating sights.
In recent years, the mysterious scenery of the large torii gate on Lake Biwa has become a hot topic on social media. Many young people have flocked to this picturesque energy spot.
