Operating mainly during the weekends, two steam trains run within Gunma Prefecture: the "SL Minakami" running from Takasaki Station to Minakami Station, and the "SL Yokokawa" running from Takasaki Station to Yokokawa Station. The "D51 steam locomotive," born in 1940 and known as "DEGOICHI," was designed for hauling freight cars. The "C61 steam locomotive," born in 1949 and known as "SIROKUICHI," was designed for hauling passenger cars. After ceasing operations in the 1960s, both locomotives have been well-preserved in a static state within Gunma Prefecture, which also retains personnel who once operated or maintained steam trains, allowing for their restoration to service.
Riding the Minakami train offers the chance to enjoy the natural beauty of Mount Akagi and the magnificent scenery of the upper Tone River, including iron bridges and valleys. On the other hand, riding the Yokokawa train allows passengers to appreciate the picturesque landscapes of Mount Myogi, resembling a traditional Chinese landscape painting, as well as the pastoral views of Mount Haruna in the distance. There are also many interesting offerings, such as SL railway bento boxes and limited edition merchandise.
