📖 SL Yamaguchi号

📝 Introduction

Take a nostalgic romantic journey on the steam train connecting "Shin-Yamaguchi" and "Tsuwano"!

📖 Details

The steam locomotive (SL), which disappeared with the modernization of railways, was revived in 1979 under the slogan "SL Yamaguchi" and operates as a temporary express train for tourism on the Yamaguchi Line. Departing from Shin-Yamaguchi Station, it passes through places like Yuda Onsen and Nagato Gorge, arriving at Tsuwano Station in Shimane Prefecture, known as the "Little Kyoto of San'in." The journey takes 2 hours and covers a distance of 62.9 kilometers, featuring many scenic spots along the way, allowing passengers to experience a nostalgic and romantic trip accompanied by the sound of a loud whistle. The SL trains operating on this route include the C57 1, known for its beautiful appearance and referred to as "The Lady," and the D51 200, known as "DEGOICHI" (please note that changes may occur during inspections and maintenance). Additionally, the passenger cars were updated in 2017. They are a complete reproduction of the old-style passenger cars from the peak era of SL, filled with nostalgic charm from the early Showa period. Inside, there are displays showcasing the configuration of SL trains and panels introducing their historical trajectory, along with a play area suitable for children.

⭐ Highlights

The impressive sight of a steam locomotive rushing by, spewing black smoke, is quite striking. You can experience a retro train from the Showa era. There are SL-related merchandise and railway bento available for sale on the platform. If you arrive early, you can see the SL steam train before the passenger cars are connected.
