📖 Details
The ama, or female divers who harvest shellfish and seaweed, were designated as a Japanese heritage in 2019. It is said that ama have existed since the Jomon period, and although their numbers have gradually decreased, this traditional occupation continues to this day. In 2016, it became the first intangible folk cultural asset designated by a prefecture in Japan. The "Ama Cottage Hachiman Kiln" is a well-known facility that introduces ama culture.
After the ama finish their diving work, various dishes are available for enjoyment in the ama cottage, where they warm up and rest. From a set meal of shellfish side dishes paired with hot tea to a luxurious seafood set that includes Ise lobster and abalone, choices can be made according to personal preferences. All the set meals are prepared by current ama using fresh seafood, grilled by hand over charcoal. While dining, guests can listen to explanations about the ama's diving and lifestyle, gaining a deeper understanding of their culture.
Travelers who make reservations for the ama cottage experience can also wear ama clothing and enjoy the fun of transforming into an ama. At the ama cottage in Kujizaki, guests can also enjoy coffee with the ama and spend an afternoon tea time together.
