📝 Introduction

Famous for the intangible cultural heritage of "Namaboko," the picturesque peninsula.

📖 Details

The northwest part of Akita Prefecture features a peninsula that extends into the Sea of Japan. The renowned "Namahage" of Oga was registered as an Intangible Cultural Heritage by UNESCO in 2018. The so-called "Namahage" is a traditional event held on New Year's Eve in over 80 areas within the Oga Peninsula. The "Namahage Sedo Festival," held in mid-February, the "Oga Shinzan Heritage Hall," where visitors can experience Namahage activities throughout the year, and the "Namahage Museum," which showcases over 150 Namahage masks, all offer a rich variety of activities and facilities related to Namahage. Surrounded by the sea on three sides, the Oga Peninsula is famous for its beautiful landscapes that extend from the mountain line to the coastline, especially the spectacular coastal scenery from Minato to the west coast and at Inudōzaki. In addition to the beloved winter delicacy, the "Kinki" fish, there is a wide variety of fresh seafood, including sea bream, cod, and crab. A must-try dish is the bold "Ishiyaki" cuisine, where seafood is cooked instantly in a wooden tub filled with hot water and red-hot stones. There is also the "Oga Onsen," known for its salt content similar to seawater, which is said to have skin-beautifying effects. It is recommended to stay overnight and leisurely explore the Oga Peninsula.
