📝 Introduction
National tangible cultural heritage, classical architecture with a sense of history.
📖 Details
Located in Kanda, Tokyo, this hall features a retro fashion design style. It was built as a gathering place for the alumni group "Gakushikai," which originated from the former Imperial University, and is now open for public visits beyond just members. This complex facility serves a wide range of functions, including banquet halls, wedding venues, hotels, restaurants, and bars.
Completed in Showa 3 (1928), the hall is a reinforced concrete structure that is earthquake-resistant and fireproof, which was quite rare at the time. Although it is a members-only club facility, it has been widely used for various purposes throughout its long history, including serving as the headquarters for the Tokyo Security Corps and, after the war, as an officers' dormitory for the United Nations Command. In 2003, it was registered as a national tangible cultural asset.
The architectural design was led by architect Sadataro Takahashi, who also worked on projects such as the Takashimaya in Nihonbashi and the new wing of the Imperial Hotel. The entrance features a semi-circular grand arch and uniquely shaped windows on each floor, showcasing a modern design aesthetic. Today, it stands as one of the iconic landmarks of the Kanda area, beloved by the public.
