📖 Details
Kintai Bridge is a nationally designated scenic spot and one of Japan's three famous bridges, representing Japan's wooden bridges. Kintai Bridge is 193.3 meters long and 5 meters wide, making it a spectacular and beautiful five-arched bridge.
Kintai Bridge was inspired by the Kintai Bridge in West Lake, Hangzhou, China, and was constructed in 1673. It was later washed away by a flood in 1950 and was rebuilt in 1953. In 2004, it became a sister bridge with the Kintai Bridge in West Lake, and a friendship monument was established.
Due to the unique structure of the bridge, it is moving towards the goal of being included in the World Cultural Heritage list. The bridge employs a "joinery technique" that supports the entire structure through the connection of wood to wood. As the pressure on the bridge increases, the bridge's ability to withstand pressure also increases. From underneath the bridge, one can clearly observe the characteristics of traditional joinery techniques.
This area is also a famous cherry blossom viewing spot. In spring, cherry blossoms bloom; in summer, visitors can feed pelicans and enjoy fireworks; in autumn, the maple leaves change color; and in winter, one can admire the snow. Various lighting events are held at night throughout the year, offering beautiful scenery in every season.
