📖 Details

Kuzuryu Shrine Hongu is a sacred site dedicated to the guardian dragon god of Lake Ashi. As an outer shrine of Hakone Shrine, it is located in the lush Hakone Kuzuryu Forest by the shores of Lake Ashi. Known for blessing wealth, good fortune, and prosperous business, Kuzuryu Shrine has recently gained popularity for its blessings of good relationships. On the 13th of each month, a ritual called "Tsukitsuki-sai" is held, attracting worshippers from all over the country to make a pilgrimage on this day. Anyone can easily participate, and on the day of the Tsukitsuki-sai, special boats for worship will depart from Moto-Hakone Port. Registration for the boat rides will begin at 8 AM at the boarding area for sightseeing boats at Moto-Hakone Port. After visiting Kuzuryu Shrine Hongu, be sure to also visit Hakone Shrine. This shrine, which is said to have been worshipped by historical figures such as Minamoto no Yoritomo and Tokugawa Ieyasu, is a place to pray for good fortune.

It is famous for the deity that governs relationships residing here, attracting many worshippers who visit to pray for good fortune in love. On the 13th of each month, a ritual called Tsukitsuki-sai is held, which also sees a large number of participants. *Currently, public worship is not open. (July 2021)

(1) Take the Izu Hakone Bus from "Hakone Yumoto" Station on the Hakone Tozan Railway to Hakone-en, and get off at the final stop; the journey takes about 1 hour. After getting off, walk for about 30 minutes to reach Hakone Kuzuryu Forest. Then, walk for another 10 minutes to arrive at the main shrine. (2) On the 13th of each month, there will be a worship boat departing from Moto-Hakone Port, which takes about 20 minutes. From the Tree Garden Port, it’s about a 10-minute walk to reach the destination.
