⛩️ Santakusan Sanbutsuji Temple's Tōdō (Hall of the Three Buddhas)
🎨 Shrine Gallery
📝 Introduction
The mysterious Buddhist hall, embedded on a sheer cliff, is a national treasure of Japan.
📖 Details
Tōrōdō is the inner hall of Sanbutsu-ji, an ancient temple of the Tendai sect of Shugendō, located in a depression on the north side of Mount Sande, at an elevation of 520 meters above sea level. According to legend, it was thrown into the rock cave by the founder of Shugendō, "Yakushimaru," using his mystical powers. This suspended hall, supported by long pillars, is said to have been built in the late Heian period and is one of the oldest existing shrine structures in Japan, although the method of construction remains an unsolved mystery to this day.
Before entering the mountain, please wear comfortable clothing and shoes suitable for movement, take safety precautions, and register at the climbing office located in the main hall of Sanbutsu-ji. The one-way distance from the main hall to Tōrōdō is about 1 kilometer and takes approximately 45 minutes, with a rugged path that can be quite challenging. Along the way, you will have to climb over vine-covered slopes intertwined with tree roots, ascend rocky areas using iron chains, and traverse a rugged mountain path known as "Uma-baka" and "Ushi-baka," which are slippery and uneven. If you are not confident in your physical stamina, you can choose to pay respects to Tōrōdō from the base of the mountain.
Sanbutsu-ji is part of the Daisen-Oki National Park and has also been designated as a "Japan Heritage." In the national park, you can enjoy magnificent views of vast primeval forests and ever-changing valleys.
