⛩️ Kirishima Shrine

📝 Introduction

The ancient shrine built in the 6th century is the largest shrine in the southern Kyushu region.

📖 Details

Kirishima Shrine represents the southern part of Kyushu. It was established in the 6th century and has a rich cultural heritage and ancient history. Due to damage caused by the eruption of Mount Kirishima, the shrine has undergone multiple reconstructions and was relocated to its current site 500 years ago. The shrine enshrines "Kuni no Tsurugi no Mikoto," the protagonist of Japan's creation myth. There are many must-see attractions within the shrine grounds. A giant tree, approximately 800 years old, is revered as the ancestor of the southern Kyushu cedar. There is also "Hosoishi," which appears in the Japanese national anthem (the Hosoishi mentioned in the anthem is referred to as "limestone breccia." Limestone dissolves due to rainwater, and through the action of lime, it accumulates over many years, forming massive rocks from small stones). The shrine holds a ritual called "Tenson Kōrin Kirishima Kyūmen Taiko" every year on January 1st, February 11th, and November 10th, during which traditional local performing arts can be enjoyed. The splendid and colorful shrine is embraced by nature, with beautiful cherry blossoms in spring and maple leaves in autumn.

⭐ Highlights

Within the shrine grounds, there is the "sazare-ishi" (細石) mentioned in the Japanese national anthem. The beautiful vermilion shrine has been designated as an Important Cultural Property of the country. It features several energy spots known as the Kirishima Mystical Legends. For example, there is a natural stone shaped like a turtle called "Kame-ishi" (龜石), and a "Kazeana" (風穴) where the wind blows through the cracks in the rocks. On clear days, you can enjoy a panoramic view of Kagoshima Bay, Sakurajima, and the city of Kagoshima from the observation deck, and even catch a glimpse of the whole Kaimon-dake area. It is said that Sakamoto Ryoma visited here during his honeymoon, making it a popular shrine for those seeking good relationships.
