The Morioka History and Culture Museum is located in a corner of Morioka Castle Ruins Park (Iwate Park). It views the ruins of Morioka Castle and the early castle town of Morioka as a museum (Field Museum). The building of the former Iwate Prefectural Library, which serves a core function, was expanded and renovated, and the museum opened in 2011. The first floor, the "Tourism Exchange Area," is free to visit and features the "Hanabata Team," which has a 200-year tradition, showcasing horse models adorned with splendid decorations, as well as the Morioka Yama-dashi used in the "Morioka Autumn Festival." There is also a "Town Information Center" that introduces Morioka's specialty products and tourism information, serving as a base for exploring the area. The second floor, the "History and Culture Area," requires an admission fee and introduces Morioka's history and culture through thematic exhibitions. In addition to displaying approximately 40,000 precious items collected by the Nanbu family, who served as lords of the Morioka domain during the Edo period, the museum recounts the history of Morioka's development from a castle town and its modernization through theaters, three-dimensional models, and recreations of townhouses.
