📖 Details

The Abashiri City Science Museum, themed around drift ice and the biology of the Sea of Okhotsk, is located at the summit of Mount Tendusan, which is designated as a national scenic spot and stands at an elevation of 207 meters. From the observation deck on the third floor, visitors can enjoy a 360-degree panoramic view of the magnificent scenery, including the Sea of Okhotsk, the Shiretoko Peninsula, and the Shiretoko mountain range. Renovated in 2023, the museum features numerous fascinating exhibits. The "Light Sculpture Projection" uses images captured by a 360-degree camera to create an immersive experience, making visitors feel as if they are diving into the Sea of Okhotsk. In the "Theater," various films are shown on five large 400-inch screens, providing a powerful visual experience. The "Drift Ice Sensation Room," set at a temperature of minus 15 degrees, recreates the low-latitude auroras and showcases real drift ice that can be touched. The museum also displays rare creatures that inhabit the Sea of Okhotsk, such as the naked sea butterfly, also known as "drift ice angels," and the Tachysurus, a type of true roundfin fish.
