📝 Introduction
Enjoy a pleasant experience of Kendo while learning the spirit of Bushido.
📖 Details
Kendo, with its intense sparring against opponents, often gives the impression of being a high-difficulty sport. However, at "彩士館" (Sai Shikan), you can enjoy a relaxed and pleasant experience of Kendo. "彩士館" is based on the concept of "Kind Enjoy Natural Design Open," forming the acronym "KENDO," aiming to create a Kendo environment that is friendly, exciting, and allows individuals to relax and be themselves, welcoming everyone. The instructor is Mr. Toshihiro Enoki, who has previously taught and led a middle school Kendo team to victory in the national championships in Japan. The name "彩士館" reflects the hope that those who learn Kendo here can "become unique and stylish warriors."
Kendo originated from swordsmanship used in battle. During the Edo period, which marked the end of the era of warfare, the opportunities for samurai to use real swords significantly decreased. To maintain their combat instincts, they began practicing with bamboo swords, which later became the foundation of Kendo. The philosophy evolved from the "killing sword" aimed at defeating opponents to the "living sword," which emphasizes keeping opponents alive. Kendo has not become an Olympic sport because it is not focused on "winning by killing the enemy," but rather on the spirit of Bushido that values "learning with a centered heart."
The experience begins with the basic etiquette of Kendo, which starts and ends with respect. Participants are guided in a simple and understandable way on how to grip, raise, and move with the bamboo sword, as well as how to swing and strike. Techniques such as the "fire stance" for upper guard and the "water stance" for middle guard are taught, which many may recall from the anime "Demon Slayer" (鬼滅の刃). Facing the instructor dressed in a Kendo uniform, participants will concentrate fully while swinging the bamboo sword; at the moment of a critical strike, they will surely feel the charm of Kendo deeply. Additionally, you can wear Kendo gear, including uniforms, masks, and chest protectors, to take commemorative photos. The hand towel used while wearing the mask can also be taken home as a souvenir.
