🗺️ Gifu Zenkoji

📝 Introduction

A temple dedicated to the Zenkō-ji Nyorai, which was moved by Oda Nobunaga.

📖 Details

During the Warring States period, Oda Nobunaga, who took control of Gifu Castle, moved the deity of Zenkō-ji from Shinshū (present-day Nagano Prefecture) to Zenkō-ji in Kōfu, Kai (present-day Yamanashi Prefecture), and had a temple built in Gifu for this purpose. After Nobunaga's death in the Incident at Honnō-ji, his second son, Nobukatsu, relocated the Zenkō-ji deity to Jimmoku-ji in Owari (present-day Aichi Prefecture). Later, Toyotomi Hideyoshi moved it to Hōgon-ji in Kyoto, and subsequently, Tokugawa Ieyasu transferred it to Kamoe-ji in Tōtōmi (present-day Shizuoka Prefecture), before it eventually returned to Zenkō-ji in Shinshū. Nobunaga's grandson, Oda Hidenobu, built a main hall at the original site where the Zenkō-ji deity was enshrined during Nobunaga's time, housing a portion of the deity. Both Gifu Zenkō-ji and Shinshū Zenkō-ji are revered as temples that welcome worshippers from all backgrounds, regardless of sect or doctrine. Additionally, the "Sealing Cucumbers" event, held in July to ward off evil by sealing misfortune within cucumbers, is also widely known.
