⛩️ Nagasaki Confucius Temple

📝 Introduction

The temple dedicated to Confucius, known worldwide for the "Analects," hosts various events in a magnificent Chinese architectural setting.

📖 Details

The only authentic Confucius Temple in Japan was built in 1893 through the collaboration of the Qing Dynasty government and overseas Chinese in Japan. Initially, it served as a primary school for the children of overseas Chinese, and later it was constructed to house and honor the relics of Confucius. Confucius is a renowned Chinese philosopher, the founder of Confucianism, and is also known as the God of Learning. The Nagasaki Confucius Temple is a Chinese building filled with traditional beauty and luxurious style, primarily consisting of the "Yimen" (Ceremonial Gate) and the "Dacheng Hall" (Great Achievement Hall). The Yimen is adorned with the Three Star Gods of Prosperity, Longevity, and Happiness, while the roof is painted with auspicious symbols such as dragons, phoenixes, and qilins. The statue of Confucius enshrined in the Dacheng Hall and the statues of the seventy-two wise disciples arranged on both sides of the hall were directly transported from China. The Nagasaki Confucius Temple is also one of the main venues for the "Nagasaki Lantern Festival." During the festival, spectacular performances such as "face-changing" and "dragon dances" are held, which are quite popular. After nightfall, the temple, illuminated by large red lanterns, presents a completely different charm compared to during the day. The temple also features the "Museum of Chinese Dynasties." The permanent exhibition hall displays national treasures from museums such as the Beijing Palace Museum. The museum changes its exhibition content several times a year, allowing visitors to see different collections with each visit.
