⛩️ Ushijima Shrine

📝 Introduction

The main guardian shrine of Honjo, famous for its "Nushi" (the cow deity) and "Komainu" (guardian lion-dogs).

📖 Details

According to legend, in the second year of the Zhenguan era (860), the ancient shrine was built by Master Jikaku Ennin under the divine guidance of the deity Susanoo. It enshrines three deities: Susanoo, who is regarded as the protector of abundant harvests, the establishment of good relationships, and the removal of misfortune; Amanohohidama, who is worshiped as the sun god and the god of rice; and Prince Chikatsu, who oversees agriculture and the expansion of knowledge. This shrine, which welcomes various prayers, is deeply revered by the public. Inside the shrine grounds, there are many unique attractions, including a magnificent hall built entirely of cypress wood with exquisite design, and the rare Miwa torii gate found in Japan. The "Nubushi" (the cow to be petted) is also a highlight not to be missed; it is said that if one has any ailments, simply stroking the corresponding part of the cow's body will lead to healing. Instead of the usual komainu (guardian dogs), the shrine features a "komainu" in the form of a cow, which watches over the deity with sharp eyes. The large festival held every five years, known as the "Shinkō-sai," features a procession centered around a black cow pulling a phoenix palanquin (ox cart), which parades through the fifty towns of the parish to pray for peace and safety.
