⛩️ Renkoin Temple

📝 Introduction

Famous for the "Bintōlu Zunzhang" and the Seven Lucky Gods pilgrimage, this temple has deep ties with the Tokugawa family.

📖 Details

Located between "Hon-Kawagoe" Station and "Kawagoe Kurazukuri Old Street," this Pure Land sect temple has a long history dating back to the Muromachi period. During the Edo period, it was recognized by the Tokugawa shogunate, which was a devout follower of the Jōdo and Tsūshū sects, as one of the "Eighteen Danrin of Kanto" for training monks, and was allowed to display the "Mitsuba Aoi" crest. The statue of Amida Nyorai enshrined here was created during the Kamakura period. The most popular feature of the temple is the large red statue of "Bintōrō Sonja" located in front of the main hall. Bintōrō Sonja is a disciple of Shakyamuni Buddha, and it is said that touching his body can cure illnesses, while touching his head can enhance wisdom, making him beloved by worshippers. Additionally, the "Tsunryō Day," held on the 8th of each month, is a significant day related to the temple's deep connection with the ascetic Tsunryō. The event features performances, storytelling sessions (tsuji kōsetsu), flea markets, and attracts many locals and tourists. On the right side of the main hall is Fuku-Roku-Jū, one of the "Seven Lucky Gods of Ko-Edo Kawagoe," who is believed to bestow longevity, good fortune, and prosperous business. It is also a good idea to visit the Seven Lucky Gods while strolling through the streets of Kawagoe, including the Kurazukuri buildings and Toki no Kane (Time Bell Tower).
