According to historical records, Miyazaki Shrine was built by Jimmu's grandson, Takeiwatatsu no Mikoto, when he served as the governor of Kyushu; the shrine buildings were constructed during the reigns of the 10th Emperor Sujin and the 12th Emperor Keikō. Surrounded by forests, the shrine exudes a sacred atmosphere, and its lush greenery can almost be described as a paradise for wild birds. Numerous cultural facilities, such as libraries, art museums, and general museums, are located nearby, making it a popular recreational spot for local citizens, especially on holidays when many people visit. The area where Miyazaki Shrine is located has been known as Miyazaki since the Nara period and was also the site of the residence of Emperor Jimmu and his predecessors, hence the name Miyazaki, which means "before the palace."
