🎨 Attraction Gallery
📝 Introduction
On both sides of the stone-paved street, there are retro alleys lined with numerous traditional pastry shops.
📖 Details
Just one street away from the "Takasawa Street" in the Kawagoe Kurazukuri Old Town, there is a narrow alley about 80 meters long, paved with stone slabs. On both sides of the street, there are numerous traditional confectionery shops, making it a popular tourist attraction in Kawagoe. The atmosphere of the alley, combined with the simple aroma of sweets, has been selected by the Japanese Ministry of the Environment as one of the "Top 100 Fragrant Landscapes."
The history of confectionery production in the area can be traced back to the Meiji era. To replace the confectionery shops in Tokyo that were affected by the Great Kanto Earthquake, production and supply increased significantly, and by the early Showa period, there were about 70 confectionery shops. Today, around 30 shops are still in operation, and the street is always bustling with people.
Each shop sells traditional Japanese snacks and sweets such as senbei (rice crackers), fu-gashi (wheat snacks), hard candies, and dango (rice dumplings). The dagashi shops are filled with a variety of nostalgic treats for adults and fresh delights for children, making it fun just to peek in front of the store. Walking down the street, one can hear the lively calls of vendors and the friendly conversations between customers and shopkeepers, creating an atmosphere that captivates even first-time visitors.
