🗺️ Idemitsu Museum of Arts (Moji)

The museum showcases the ceramics and paintings collected by Sasa Mitsuhiro, the founder of the well-known Japanese oil company Idemitsu Kosan. Sasa Mitsuhiro established the "Idemitsu Trading Company" in Moji and served as the president of the Chamber of Commerce, having deep ties to the local community. The museum features an elegant brick exterior that perfectly blends into the nostalgic atmosphere of the Moji Port area. The exhibits primarily consist of Japanese paintings and Chinese and Japanese ceramics. Among them, the collection of works by the Edo period Zen monk and painter Sengai Gibon, as well as ancient Karatsu ware produced from the late 16th century to the mid-17th century, is among the finest in Japan. The museum also displays numerous works by contemporary authors with whom Sasa had close relationships. In addition to the permanent exhibition, the museum hosts 5 to 6 themed exhibitions each year, carefully selecting works based on the theme. Inside the museum, there is the "Idemitsu Entrepreneurship Historical Materials Room," which introduces Sasa Mitsuhiro's life and achievements through historical documents from that time.
