📖 Details
Located in the border area of Japan, Wakkanai City in Hokkaido is nicknamed the "City of Wind" due to its strong sea breezes throughout the four seasons. The most striking building in the area is the "Wakkanai Port North Breakwater Dome," which was designated as a Hokkaido Heritage in 2001.
Completed in 1936, the dome measures 427 meters in length and 13.6 meters in height, supported by 70 thick round columns in a semi-circular structure. Its grand and magnificent design evokes the architecture of ancient Rome.
Originally built as a shelter against wind and waves for the Sakhalin shipping route, it served as an important construction to protect travelers and goods. Together with the adjacent railway boarding area, it is a vital transportation hub in the region.
Today, it is a popular photo spot for tourists, especially at sunset when the dome bathed in the evening light appears particularly dreamy. It is not only used for various seasonal events but also serves as a filming location for movies and television commercials.
