📖 Details

The Leisure House (Japanese: やすらぎの家) is a cultural exchange facility that has been relocated from an old house built over a hundred years ago to a rural mountainous area. Here, visitors can learn about and experience the local traditional food culture and lifestyle. Not only can you enjoy delicious handmade udon noodles made by locals, but you can also learn to make udon noodles yourself. The instructors for the experience activities are local residents of Tokigawa Town. There is a saying in Tokigawa Town that "if you can't roll out a good udon noodle, it's hard to get married," indicating that the skill of making noodles is considered one of the criteria for establishing oneself in a new family. With skilled instructors providing careful guidance, even first-time participants can create delicious udon noodles. Tokigawa Town is located in the central region of Saitama Prefecture, about an hour's drive from Tokyo. The mountains are filled with oak trees, and you can even see a giant Totoro made from cedar leaves in the mountains! All the processes of mixing, kneading, stretching, and cutting the noodles are done by hand, without the need for any machines. The skilled movements attract people's attention like a magnet. Finally, the handmade udon noodles are ready. You can taste the freshly made noodles on the spot. Although the noodles are thin, they are very chewy. The udon noodles you make yourself are especially delicious! Outside the facility, there are terrace seats where you can enjoy a meal while appreciating the beautiful scenery of the mountains and forests, spending a fulfilling and joyful time.
