⛩️ Okinoshima Shrine Underwater Torii

📝 Introduction

The vermilion torii gate in the sea at the top of the mountain, experiencing the mysterious landscape influenced by the moon's gravity.

📖 Details

In Taiaracho, the difference between high and low tide in the Ariake Sea is significant. During high tide, the three torii gates of the Ooyama Shrine appear to float on the water, creating a dreamlike atmosphere that has become a hot topic on various social media platforms in recent years. There is a legend associated with the torii gates. About 300 years ago, due to the misdeeds of officials, the suffering people abandoned a drunken official on a small island in the Ariake Sea. As the tide rose and the island was about to be submerged, a large fish appeared and rescued him, allowing the official to return safely on the fish's back. After this incident, the official reformed his ways and built the Ooyama Shrine and the torii gates in the sea. The Ooyama Shrine is dedicated to ensuring safety at sea and abundant catches, allowing people to live prosperous lives. During low tide, one can walk along the path that extends into the shallow waters of the Ariake Sea. This path is an essential part of Taiaracho's fishing industry, especially during winter when nori cultivation takes place. Visitors are asked to refrain from disturbing the area and to maintain proper etiquette while visiting. Around August, the "Sen no Lantern Festival" is held, featuring 500 lanterns and the torii gates in the sea, creating a beautiful spectacle.
