⛩️ Hakone Shrine (箱根神社)

📝 Introduction

A solemn and mysterious power spot! A famous shrine dedicated to the guardian deity of Hakone.

📖 Details

Hakone Shrine is located by the shores of Lake Ashi, surrounded by beautiful attractions such as Owakudani and Togendai. It enshrines the deity "Hakone Okami" and is one of the most renowned shrines in the Kanto region. With a history dating back more than 1,260 years to the early Nara period, it has gained fame and respect from many historical figures, including Minamoto no Yoritomo and Tokugawa Ieyasu. Today, it is worshipped as a deity for good fortune, offering protection against misfortune, the fulfillment of wishes, victory in battles, road safety, and the establishment of good relationships. Walking along the approach path that extends from Lake Ashi, immersed in the natural atmosphere, you will be greeted by the vermillion-lacquered honden (main shrine building) standing in front of Mount Hakone. It is recommended to also visit the Hakone Shrine's subsidiary shrine, Kyūdzun Shrine (九頭龍神社), which enshrines the guardian deity of Lake Ashi, and the main shrine "Hakone Motomiya" to experience the "three shrine pilgrimage." Hakone Shrine also features many sights worth seeing. The "Heiwa Torii" (平和鳥居) offers a breathtaking view of Lake Ashi, the "Ryūjin Suisha" (龍神水舍) allows you to take home the sacred water that emerges from within the shrine, and the "Yatate Sugi" (矢立杉樹), a tree said to be around 1,200 years old, is notable as well. Additionally, the treasure hall, which displays various important cultural properties designated by the government, is not to be missed.
