🎨 Shrine Gallery
📝 Introduction
One of the Tōshōgū shrines built by Date Tadamune, the second lord of the Sendai domain.
📖 Details
The Tōshōgū Shrine, with Tokugawa Ieyasu as its deity, is distinguished from other Tōshōgū shrines across the country by being referred to as Sendai Tōshōgū. It was built by Date Tadamune, the second lord of the Sendai domain. The location of the shrine has a significant connection to Tokugawa Ieyasu, as it is said that he once rested here under the guidance of Date Masamune, thus establishing its status as a guardian deity for the Date family and the Sendai castle town.
The main hall, along with the Karamon gate, the tobori (moat), the stone torii gate, and the suidōmon (water gate), has been designated as an important cultural property by the national government. On April 17th, during the annual festival, the Karamon gate is opened. The "shichihō kanagu" (seven treasures metal fittings) used in the main hall's decorations are unique to both the Nikkō Tōshōgū and Sendai Tōshōgū. Additionally, Sendai Tōshōgū primarily offers blessings for maritime safety, family safety, academic success, and prosperous business, attracting many visitors who come to pray for various blessings, as well as those who visit specifically to admire the main hall and its architecture.
In addition to the worship hall, the shrine grounds are also a well-known cherry blossom viewing spot. Approximately 80 cherry trees are planted, including the Somei Yoshino variety starting from the entrance, weeping cherry trees on the west side of the worship hall, and mountain cherry trees on the north side. Although the number of cherry trees is small, the ability to appreciate both the profound beauty of the shrine's architecture and the beauty of the cherry blossoms makes it extremely popular.
