⛩️ Shinagawa Jinja Shrine (品川神社)

📝 Introduction

A shrine featuring a "Fuji-zuka" (a mound representing Mt. Fuji) and a "Soryu-torii" (twin dragon torii gate), it is one of the ten great shrines of Tokyo.

📖 Details

Shinagawa Shrine was established in 1187 to pray for the safety of maritime traffic. During the "Shinagawa Shrine Grand Festival" held in early June each year, processions of floating shrines and bustling crowds fill the streets, immersing the entire city in a lively and festive atmosphere. Nearby, seven shrines each enshrine one of the seven deities of good fortune known as the "Tōkai Shichifukujin." Shinagawa Shrine is dedicated to Daikokuten, the god of wealth. Every New Year, the shrine is crowded with worshippers participating in the "Shichifukujin Pilgrimage." Standing at the entrance of the shrine is a stone torii known as the "Sōryū Torii," which is intricately carved with dragon sculptures. This type of torii is found in only three places in Tokyo. Within the shrine grounds, there is an artificial hill called "Fujizuka," designed to mimic Mount Fuji. It is generally believed that climbing "Fujizuka" is akin to actually ascending Mount Fuji, granting the blessings of the deities and bestowing the same energy.

⭐ Highlights

The grand festival held in early June is quite lively. It is dedicated to Daikokuten, one of the "Shichi Fukujin" (Seven Lucky Gods) of the Eastern Sea. The "Shoryou Torii" (Double Dragon Torii Gate) can only be found in three places in Tokyo. It is one of Tokyo's top ten shrines. The artificial hill "Fujizuka," modeled after Mount Fuji, is said to grant the same merits as climbing Mount Fuji.
