📖 Details

Nagataki Temple was founded in 717 AD by Taichu and is a temple that conveys the belief in the natural wisdom of Mount Hakusan. The area features towering, strange rock formations and mystical stones with many caves, creating a fairyland-like landscape. It also includes important cultural properties designated by the state, such as the three-story pagoda, main hall, bell tower, goma hall, and the strikingly red-railed Momizuki Bridge, all forming a scene reminiscent of a landscape painting. Throughout the temple grounds, one can see features not found in other temple buildings, including the state-designated important cultural properties of the study hall, gardens, and tea rooms. The Ryubi-en, famous for its sacred three-respected stones that split into three at the back, is open for special visits. At Nagataki Temple, there is a practice called "Natural Wisdom," which refers to the pursuit of wisdom born from nature, conducted in small grass huts or caves. The belief in Mount Hakusan is deeply rooted in Kaga, honoring the gods of nature. The temple, known since ancient times as a place for natural wisdom, contains a cave called "Iwaya," which can be entered for pilgrimage. Caves have historically been sites of death and burial, seen as entrances to another world, regarded as a maternal womb. It is said that pilgrimage within the Iwaya can cleanse one of the sins of this life, allowing for rebirth as a new soul to start anew.

There are 7 important cultural properties from various countries and 2 designated scenic gardens. It is said that visiting the interior of the Iwaya can cleanse the sins of this life, allowing one to be reborn as a brand new soul.
