📝 Introduction
The temple, originating from the Southern Dynasties, is a beloved cherry blossom viewing spot that feels like a hidden paradise for tourists.
📖 Details
A Pure Land sect temple located in Yoshinoyama. This temple has deep roots with the Southern Dynasty and served as a temple of imperial decree for Emperor Go-Daigo during the Nanboku-chō period (mid to late 14th century). It houses the mausoleum of Emperor Go-Daigo and the tomb of Prince Yoshitoyo. Every year on September 27, the "Emperor Go-Daigo Memorial Service" is held on the lunar anniversary of Emperor Go-Daigo's death, and the normally closed main hall is open for visitors on that day.
Additionally, the son of Kusunoki Masashige, the famous military commander of the Nanboku-chō period, Kusunoki Masatsura, visited this temple with his clan's warriors to pray before the Battle of Shijōnawate. He carved a farewell poem on the main hall's entrance with a bow and arrow, which remains to this day. The grounds also feature statues of the Kusunoki father and son, as well as a thick-skinned fragrant tree planted by Masatsura himself, making it a must-visit spot even for those who are not history enthusiasts.
Separated by a valley from areas bustling with tourist attractions and shops, the temple remains relatively quiet even during cherry blossom season, allowing visitors to enjoy the blossoms leisurely. From the garden's study, one can gaze at the stunning cherry blossoms in full bloom along the Chūsenbon. The beautiful scenery of the weeping cherry trees in the garden against the backdrop of the two-tiered pagoda is also not to be missed from late March to early April.
