📝 Introduction

An ancient shrine dedicated to the guardian deity of the land in Atami, representing a famous energy spot in Atami.

📖 Details

Kaminomiya Shrine has long been revered by the people of Atami as a deity of "fortune and auspiciousness." Within its grounds stands a large camphor tree, considered a sacred tree and designated as a national natural monument, making it one of Japan's famous energy spots. The vibrant camphor tree is over 2,100 years old, and it is said that walking around the tree once can extend one's life by a year. There is also a local legend that if one makes a wish while walking around the tree, that wish will come true. Many visitors come to pray for health, longevity, and the realization of their wishes. Numerous people visit Kaminomiya Shrine to collect the sacred water. It is said that drinking this water can purify the body and mind, bless one with good health, and bring good fortune. The fee for collecting the sacred water is 1,000 yen per visit. The shrine is also known as a deity that prohibits alcohol, and visitors can obtain the "Sakanazukushi Omamori," a charm that protects against disasters caused by drinking. Additionally, the "Camphor Tree Insect Repellent Omamori," which helps ward off calamities, is also quite popular. There are several cafes within the shrine grounds where visitors can take a break during their visit and enjoy the shrine's specialty dessert—"Baked Barley Bun" (Japanese: 麦こがし饅頭). It is said that the Baked Barley Bun is a particularly favored offering to the deities and makes for a great souvenir. Kaminomiya Shrine holds a lighting ceremony every evening. The lighting lasts from dusk until around 11:30 PM. Approximately 160 lanterns represent the spirits of the trees residing in the thickets. Under the night sky, the shrine is illuminated by enchanting lights, creating a tranquil and mysterious atmosphere that is entirely different from the daytime, making it well worth a visit.
