🎨 Shrine Gallery
📝 Introduction
A historic temple with a beautiful garden designated as a national scenic spot, showcasing artifacts related to 井伊直虎 (Ii Naotora).
📖 Details
Ryotanji Temple is a monastery deeply connected to Ii Naotora. Ii Naotora was a female lord who actively participated in the political arena of Japanese history under a male name. Ryotanji Temple serves as the family temple of the Ii clan and was once presided over by Naotora's trusted advisor, Monk Nankei Zuimon.
The main hall, rich in historical atmosphere, is quite exquisite. The floor of the corridor features the "Uguisu-bari" (nightingale floor), which creaks when stepped on. It is said to have been crafted by the famous Edo period sculptor, Sajin Gorō, showcasing the technical level of that time.
One of the highlights of Ryotanji Temple is its garden, which is also designated as a national scenic spot. With the changing seasons, seasonal flowers such as plum blossoms, camellias, azaleas, and hydrangeas take turns blooming, adorning the temple with various charms, especially the breathtaking autumn leaves that last until early winter.
The special exhibition held at the temple every autumn is also remarkable. One of the highlights is the Ryotanji folding screen "Yūgaku no Zu," which depicts secular life in the early Edo period and is designated as a cultural property by the prefecture. The screen illustrates scenes of ancient people drinking, gambling, playing with flower cards, and fishing. Additionally, precious artifacts such as the old encyclopedia "Songban Kinshū Bange" left by Oda Nobunaga (designated as an important cultural property) are also on display. The numerous exhibits, imbued with the passage of time, allow visitors to forget the hustle and bustle of the city and immerse themselves in a historical atmosphere.
In the rest area of the parking lot, there is a souvenir shop where visitors can purchase Ii Naotora merchandise, eel ice cream, and local specialties such as small bags made from the famous "Enshū Shima."
