📝 Introduction

📖 Details
Senryūji Temple was built in the first year of the Tenpyō Shingo era (765) and is a lush temple located in Komae City, Tokyo. It is situated near Komae Station, yet the grounds are densely filled with greenery, showcasing seasonal natural landscapes such as cherry blossoms, fresh greenery, and autumn leaves.
According to legend, Senryūji was established by the monk Ryōben, who built the temple while praying for rain during the construction of Tōdai-ji. Initially, it was a temple of the Hossō and Kegon sects, but during the Heian period, it transitioned to the Tendai sect. It later experienced a decline but revived during the Sengoku period as a Zen training hall of the Sōtō sect. In the late Edo period, it was extensively featured in publications such as "Edo Meisō Zue" and "Shijin Chimeiroku," becoming one of the most historically significant sites in the Komae area.
The temple grounds include a rare two-story bell tower and a sanmon gate that was rebuilt in the 6th year of Ansei (1859). The main hall, rebuilt in the 3rd year of Bōei (1706), is the oldest structure in Komae City. Additionally, the "Benzaiten Pond," where it is said that water sprang forth when Ryōben prayed for rain, is still preserved near the temple today.
