🗺️ Zao Echo Line

📝 Introduction

A beautiful and enchanting mountain sightseeing route that showcases the scenery of all four seasons.

📖 Details

The Zao Echo Line is a mountain road that runs east-west across the Zao mountain range. Opened in Showa 37 (1962), it connects Zao Town in Miyagi Prefecture and Kaminoyama City in Yamagata Prefecture. This 26-kilometer-long scenic road welcomes visitors with its distinctly different seasonal views. It is closed from early November to late April during the winter season. In spring, there are snow corridors; in summer, fresh greenery; and in autumn, vibrant red and yellow leaves can be seen. Among these, the autumn foliage season is the most popular. Starting in late September, the beech and maple trees lining the road begin to change color from the mountaintop, with mid-October being the most beautiful time. The warm tones of bright red, vivid yellow, and orange, contrasted with the green of coniferous trees, create a stunning tapestry of colorful autumn leaves. A large number of tourists travel great distances to witness this colorful artwork of nature, so please be aware that traffic jams may frequently occur during the autumn foliage season. To enjoy a smooth drive, it is recommended to go early in the morning.
