⛩️ Dairyuji Temple

📝 Introduction

A temple famous for its Dharma Guanyin and lantern azaleas.

📖 Details

Located at the border between Gifu City and Yamagata City, this Zen temple enshrines the An Kannon Bodhisattva, a sacred object dedicated by Emperor Go-Shirakawa. The temple is widely known as the "Temple of Daruma for Wishes" because it is associated with the granting of wishes through Daruma. Within the temple grounds stands a 5-meter tall statue of Daruma Master. Every mid-January, the "Daruma Offering" ceremony is held, where each worshiper presents a Daruma doll with painted eyes as an offering while making their wishes. The Darumas offered at the temple are stacked high and then burned using green bamboo known as "Fukutake." The scene of Darumas being thrown into the roaring flames is quite a sight. Dairyūji is also a famous spot for viewing azaleas, with 1,200 azalea trees planted in the temple's garden and on the back mountain. The garden is open to the public during the spring and autumn seasons, showcasing numerous white flowers in spring and vibrant red leaves in autumn, delighting visitors. This temple has connections to "Inaba Ittetsu," the foremost of the Mino Three Heroes, and houses many related artifacts.
