📖 Details

Located at the foot of Mount Hakodate, the Funakoshi Shrine, which has historically protected the "Hakodate Port," is said to be the oldest shrine in Hokkaido. It enshrines the gods of tides and the sea, and is regarded as a guardian of safe maritime navigation and road traffic. Additionally, due to its significance in ensuring the safety of shipping routes, it attracts students preparing for exams and job seekers who are looking to determine their life direction. The Tsugaru Strait in front of Hakodate is known for its turbulent tides, and historically, it has often been the site of maritime accidents. According to legend, the famous warrior "Minamoto no Yoshitsune" nearly encountered a shipwreck during his voyages in the Heian period, but thanks to the blessings of the Funakoshi Shrine, he safely reached the land of Hakodate. Another legend tells that after Yoshitsune landed and was searching for water due to thirst, a child deity appeared to guide him, leading him to a spring of clear water that flowed abundantly. The shrine office sells an amulet called "Tachimori," which features a design of a ship's helm, and it is popular among fishermen, maritime workers, students preparing for exams, and young job seekers.
