📝 Introduction

The story background of the literary masterpiece is a hot spring town rich in outdoor activities during summer and winter.

📖 Details

Located in the famous hot spring area of Echigo-Yuzawa, it is not only a ski resort in winter but also offers outdoor activities like hiking and camping in summer. Along the prefectural road extending to JR Echigo-Yuzawa Station, there are numerous accommodations, restaurants, and souvenir shops forming a hot spring street. It is said to have opened in the late Heian period and is famous as the backdrop for Yasunari Kawabata's masterpiece "Snow Country." Near Echigo-Yuzawa Station, there are over 50 accommodations, ranging from tranquil traditional inns to stylish modern Japanese lodgings that exude luxury. There are also several hot spring facilities where visitors can easily enjoy a soak. With the "Onsen Tour Ticket," you can enjoy five public baths at a great price, along with several free foot baths (some facilities are only open in summer). Some inns and hotels also offer single-use hot spring access. The area also features a traditional shooting range where you can shoot targets with cork bullets, and depending on the number of hits, you can win corresponding prizes. On the streets, you can enjoy the famous bamboo leaf dumplings or charcoal-grilled dumplings while shopping for souvenirs. If you want to explore everywhere, renting an electric assist bicycle at the "Snow Country Tourist Center" in front of the station (note: rentals are not available in winter) is very convenient. The hot spring street is filled with a retro atmosphere reminiscent of the Showa era.
