🗺️ Lake Shikotsu

📝 Introduction

Standing proudly in the rich embrace of nature, the beautiful and pristine northern lakes.

📖 Details

Shikotsu Lake, with a circumference of about 40 kilometers, is a volcanic crater lake formed by volcanic activity 40,000 years ago. It reaches a maximum depth of 360 meters, making it the second deepest lake in Japan. Due to the low nutrient levels in the water, there are few plankton, which gives the lake water one of the highest transparencies in the country. Under sunlight, the lake surface sparkles with a blue hue, earning it the beautiful nickname "Shikotsu Blue" (支笏湖ブルー). Shikotsu Lake is part of Shikotsu-Toya National Park, surrounded by high mountains such as Mount Eniwa, Mount Fubetsu, and Mount Tarumae, all exceeding 1,000 meters in elevation, along with pristine forests, making it a treasure of nature. In spring, tender green buds emerge, and colorful flowers bloom; in autumn, the leaves turn red, and in winter, the snow scenery changes with the seasons. There are also abundant outdoor activities such as diving and fishing. The most popular activity is kayaking, as the water temperature in Shikotsu Lake remains around 4°C year-round, making it almost ice-free and enjoyable throughout the year. Floating on the clear lake surface in a kayak offers a serene and comfortable experience, as if one is floating in the air. Along the lakeside, there is a hot spring town that gathers numerous accommodation facilities and restaurants serving dishes made with the local Hime Masu (姫鱒) trout. Before heading out for a walk, it is advisable to visit the visitor center in the hot spring town to learn about the history and nature of Shikotsu Lake.
