🗺️ Fuzan Temple and the Tide Pavilion

📝 Introduction

The guest hall of the temple overlooking the breathtaking view of Tōnoura from the hill.

📖 Details

The Shingon sect temple Fukusenji was built by the monk Kuuya around the year 950 during the Heian period. The guest hall next to the main hall was constructed during the Edo period, and the "Tachiarai Tower," which has a history of 330 years, is designated as a national historic site. Located on a hill, the Tachiarai Tower served as a guesthouse for the Korean envoys during the Edo period. From the Japanese-style room in the Tachiarai Tower, one can enjoy a breathtaking view of the calm Seto Inland Sea and the islands of Tōnoura. One of the Korean envoys praised the scenery here as "Nihon Daiichi Keiseki" (the best scenic spot in Japan). From the central tatami area, one can clearly see the nearby Senzaijima, Bentenjima, and Kōgajima islands. It is recommended to include the building's window frame in photos to capture beautiful images resembling landscape paintings. During the "Iroha Maru Sinking Incident," when the steamship "Iroha Maru," led by Sakamoto Ryōma's Kaientai, collided with the "Meikō Maru" belonging to the Kishu Domain, negotiations took place here between the Kaientai and the Kishu Domain, making Tachiarai Tower a well-known attraction. Today, a ferry named "Heisei Iroha Maru," designed to resemble the "Iroha Maru," operates between Tōnoura and Senzaijima, and one can also see the ferry sailing from the Tachiarai Tower.
