📖 Details
Mehari Sushi (also known as "Big-Eyed Sushi") is a soul food that has been renowned in the Nanki region centered around Shingu since ancient times. Its distinctive feature is that the sushi is wrapped in pickled mustard greens, shaped like a straw bundle. Mehari Sushi is said to have originally been a classic bento staple for people working by the sea or in the mountains. In recent years, its rustic flavor, which combines pickles and rice, along with its beautiful appearance that doesn't easily fall apart over time, has made it a popular bento option in convenience stores.
Although there are various theories about the origin of the name "Big-Eyed Sushi," the most compelling explanation is that when you put the sushi in your mouth, you are surprised by its deliciousness and size, causing your eyes to widen (in Japanese, "目張り" or "mehari"). The most common way to season Mehari Sushi is with soy sauce, but different shops may use vinegared rice or include ingredients like pickled plums, so be sure to try them all.
Founded in 1962, "Sōhonke Mehariya" is known for being the first to commercialize Mehari Sushi. The main store is located in Shingu, with a branch in front of JR Wakayama Station. This shop is characterized by adding chopped mustard greens to the rice and using a secret soy sauce-based dressing. Another highlight is that the shop prepares the hot white rice only after the customer places an order, allowing you to enjoy a steaming hot Mehari Sushi that you can't find elsewhere. After letting the sushi sit for a while, the flavors deepen, offering a different taste experience. You might want to try enjoying it in the shop and then take another portion home to savor the different flavors.
Additionally, Mehari Sushi sets that come with side dishes like skewered fried items and pork miso soup are also recommended. Single orders of Mehari Sushi are available for takeout.
