📖 Oigawa Railway

📝 Introduction

Take a nostalgic trip on the SL train! Don't miss "Thomas the Tank Engine" either!

📖 Details

The Oigawa Railway is operated by SL steam locomotives pulling active train cars, traveling back and forth on the steep slopes of the Ikawa Line, making it Japan's only Abt rack railway system. In addition to railway enthusiasts, it also attracts many women and children. To experience riding the SL train, you need to board at "Shin-Kanaya" station. You can ride on nostalgic trains manufactured during the old Japan National Railways era, featuring tungsten filament lamps and electric fans on the roof, creating a strong sense of travel ambiance. The train is staffed with dedicated conductors who introduce the scenic views along the route. After getting off at "Chisen," you will need to transfer from the SL train to a train heading to the Oku-Oi Gorge. Along the way, at "Abuto Ichishiro" station, an Abt electric locomotive will be attached, and once the vehicle's gears engage with the railway's rack, it will continue forward, immediately challenging Japan's steepest section. Some platforms are located above the lake at Oku-Oi Lake Station and at the Kanasuzawa Bridge, the highest railway bridge in Japan, making this route feel like a hidden gem that never gets old. Since 2014, the beloved "Thomas the Tank Engine" has started operating during the summer and autumn seasons, favored by children around the world. Inside the train, announcements are made in Thomas's voice, so families visiting with children should definitely not miss this experience.
