📖 Details
Located near Oronko Port, the giant rock stands at a height of 60 meters. "Oronko Rock" means "the rock that sits there" in the Ainu language, and its name is said to originate from the indigenous "Oronko tribe" that lived nearby. Oronko Rock, which has existed since ancient times, has now become a symbol of Shiretoko.
On the side of the rock, there is a steep staircase with about 170 steps that leads to the top. The summit is flat and offers a 360-degree panoramic view of the clear and transparent Sea of Okhotsk, the majestic Shiretoko mountain range, and the scenic Utorokko area. This beautiful landscape is even listed as one of the "Eight Views of Shiretoko."
One of the great charms of Oronko Rock is its changing appearance with the seasons. In summer, the top of the rock is adorned with delicate flowers. In winter, the vast scenery of drifting ice is equally spectacular. It is conveniently located near the boarding point for the "Shiretoko Sightseeing Boat," making it perfect for a combined boat tour.
