🗺️ Senba Tōshōgū

📝 Introduction

One of Japan's three major Tōshōgū shrines, it has many highlights worth seeing.

📖 Details

In Japan, the three major Tōshōgū shrines, which enshrine Tokugawa Ieyasu, include the "Nikkō Tōshōgū," where Ieyasu rests, and the "Kunōzan Tōshōgū," the first Tōshōgū shrine in Japan. It is said that during the transport of Ieyasu's remains, the monk Tenkai was conducting a four-day ritual at the nearby Kita-in, and later, in the 10th year of the Kan'ei era (1633), the shrine was completed. The brightly colored main hall, karamon gate, suikō (sacred fence), haiden (worship hall), heiden (offering hall), zuishin-mon (guardian gate), and stone torii gate are all designated as Important Cultural Properties of Japan. The intricate and beautiful three-dimensional designs applied throughout the buildings attract the attention of visitors. In front of the main hall, there are 26 stone lanterns donated by the successive lords of Kawagoe, arranged in the same manner as those at other Tōshōgū shrines. The shrine is known for blessing "promotion and good fortune" and "prosperous business," and within the grounds, you can find foods with auspicious meanings, such as "Kōun dango" (good luck dumplings) and "Shōkan miso oden" (promotion miso stew). The area is also a famous spot for viewing autumn leaves, and during the fall season, the path from the entrance to the worship hall is adorned with vibrant autumn colors.
