📝 Introduction
A shrine famous for the god of prosperous business.
📖 Details
According to legend, in the year 600 during the reign of Empress Suiko, Prince Shotoku built Shitennoji Temple and dedicated it to the guardian deity of the West. It is a historic shrine with a long-standing and esteemed status. Revered as the god of prosperous business and complete blessings, it has garnered the faith of the people, especially during the "Toka Ebisu" festival held every January, where many worshippers come to pray for good fortune, affectionately calling it "Ebessan" (えべっさん).
The main shrine enshrines eight deities: Amaterasu Omikami, the deity known as Ebisu (事代主命), Susanoo no Mikoto, Tsukuyomi no Mikoto, and Wakuhime no Mikoto, along with Okuninushi no Mikoto enshrined in the Okuni Shrine. The serene and solemn atmosphere permeates the grounds, where the main shrine, Okuni Shrine, and Inari Shrine stand, allowing visitors to worship in tranquility even amidst the urban setting.
When entering through the East Gate or North Gate at the back of the main shrine, the traditional custom is to first worship at the front of the main shrine, followed by a secondary prayer at the gong located at the back, known as "Ura Sanpai" or "Saido Sanpai."
Among the offerings, the most notable is the wish board made from acrylic placed in a colorful "Fulfillment Bag," which is dedicated at the shrine as "Enman Seijaku Ema." Additionally, the 24K gold-plated "Kinun Mamoru" (金運守) and the "Shin'en Mamoru" made with gem-gloss silk threads are also popular among worshippers. Seasonal limited gold leaf goshuin (temple stamps), including those for Toka Ebisu, attract many devotees who regularly visit to worship.
