📖 Details

To blend harmoniously with the surrounding landscape, the building is intentionally designed to be low in height, featuring soft curves reminiscent of ocean waves, symbolizing the connection between water and land, akin to a "sandbank." The collection is diverse, encompassing paintings, crafts, photography, and sculptures, with over 3,000 pieces of ukiyo-e and Japanese prints, making it one of the largest collections in Japan. The museum also houses several works by artists such as Gustave Courbet, Claude Monet, and Katsushika Hokusai, all centered around the theme of water, aligning with the museum's focus. Additionally, there are traditional craft works from local artists in Shimane, including paintings, ceramics, and lacquerware. Besides specific themed exhibitions, various planned exhibitions are also held. From the museum's lobby, scenic terrace, and the lakeside park featuring popular sculptures like "Shinji Lake Usagi," visitors can enjoy panoramic views of Lake Shinji and Matsue city. From March to September, the museum remains open until 30 minutes after sunset, allowing travelers to fully appreciate the stunning sunset views of Lake Shinji, which has been selected as one of Japan's "Top 100 Sunsets."
